The traceroute repeats itself until the command terminates when either the host is reached, the escape sequence (Ctrl-Shift-A) is triggered, the TTL reaches 30 (default TTL for Cisco), or the TTL exceeds the set amount. The source then increases the TTL to 2, and after two hops it is sent back. So for the first hop in the path, the TTL is decreased by 1, and because TTL now equals 0, the error message containing the hop information packet is sent back to the sender. Every hop in the path decreases the TTL by 1. The sending host sets the TTL initially to 1. This is the mechanism that identifies every hop. The source address of the ICMP error packet identifies the hop that discarded the data packet. If the field is decremented to 0, the packet is discarded and an error indication packet (an ICMP time exceeded) is sent back to the sender. The traceroute mechanism is based on the TTL field of an IP packet. This is why it is more precise to refer to traceroute as a hop-discovery tool. The mathematical model for traceroute does not consider the queues that are typical for every hop when there is competing traffic. This suggestion is not exactly correct because every router contains links, switching-forwarding engines, and queues. NOTE The traceroute command is considered a baseline tool. It narrows down connectivity issues, helps to discover routing loops, and determines baseline network layer performance on a hop-by-hop basis.
The traceroute command tests the connectivity of the path between two devices (hops). Cisco/UNIX uses UDP packets, and Microsoft uses ICMP packets, which are more likely to be filtered.
The traceroute (Cisco/UNIX) and tracert (Microsoft) commands differ slightly. Available as traceroute in Cisco and UNIX based-platforms, and tracert in Microsoft-based platforms.
